John Sheehan Snr has been carving the highest quality New Zealand pounamu and carefully selected jade from all over the world for more than 30 years.
Originally from the United States, Sheehan emigrated to New Zealand in the 1980s.
Having honed his skills over many years, he is now internationally acclaimed as one of New Zealand’s finest stone carvers.
Through his close relationship with Ngāi Tahu, Sheehan has access to New Zealand pounamu of extraordinary quality and beauty, including rare and much sought-after flower jade from the Marsden area of the West Coast.
Of his own work, Sheehan says he aims to achieve two things: recognition and respect for the stone’s cultural value and traditions while exploring a future for jade that’s “less familiar”.
Sharing his passion for jade, Sheehan has supported and nurtured generations of stone carving artists across New Zealand and continues to mentor new and emerging practitioners.
