Originally from Germany, Ilse-Marie Erl moved to New Zealand in the late 1980s.
She has a Bachelor of Design and a Master of Design from UNITEC Institute of Technology in Auckland and has been a Lecturer in Contemporary Craft, Jewellery, Furniture and Object Making at the same institution.
Erl was a founding member of the Whau Studios Contemporary Jewellery Collective in Auckland and now works full-time on her own jewellery-making practice.
Her most recent series of gold-plated fine silver work, Colombia, was inspired by a visit in 2017 to the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) in Bogota.
I literally was moved to tears looking at the vast range of utterly stunning pure gold artifacts created by the original people of South America. Deeply fascinated by the magnificent texture of these objects I have used materials and processes available to me to echo their sensual quality.
