Luke Ryan O'Connor

Luke O’Connor is a Sydney based artist. Using ceramic as a medium, he explores the vessel form as a site of experimentation.

Practicing a combination of throwing on the potter’s wheel, moulds and coiled hand building, Luke creates dynamic and playful works that reference the utilitarian language embedded in the history of ceramics while presenting objects that are formally and functionally ambiguous.

O’Connor’s use of multi-coloured glazes produces congealed, thick, creamy coatings that melt and crack in layers on his vessels. Casts from re-cycled chunks of brick, tile and Styrofoam - reborn in gaudy sheen and ‘dolled up’ in gold and platinum lustre – extrude from the vessels creating new sculptural and unconventional forms.

In reimagining the traditional ceramic ideology, with its peculiarities and wilfulness, his work both challenges and pays homage to the craft.
