Sofie Arbuckle
Drawing her inspiration from early English ceramics and a love of Belleek China, Sofie Arbuckle’s richly coloured and decorated works have a whimsical, almost timeless beauty.
After an early career as a dancer with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Arbuckle began working with clay while living in England in 2019. Returning to New Zealand, she obtained a Diploma in Art and Creativity, majoring in ceramics. Following further study in Glaze Chemistry, Arbuckle developed her own glaze recipes giving each work a unique and vibrant personality of its own.
In addition to her passion for ceramics, Arbuckle is a certified holistic health coach and a keen free diver. The influence of the sea can be seen in many of her works which she likes to think of as artifacts with a mysterious story, as though they could have been created in the depths of the ocean itself.
Arbuckle was a finalist in the Rick Rudd Emerging Practitioner in Clay Award in2021 and was awarded Excellence in Hand Built Ceramics at Ceramicus at the Academy of Fine Arts the same year.
