In Basara Yobitsugi Aaron Scythe further explores the aesthetics of mended Japanese pottery, celebrating the playfulness and great beauty that comes with misshapen objects.
At the heart of this work is the ancient Japanese tradition of Yobitsugi where broken ceramics are mended with alien materials for both restoration and as a form of new artistic expression.
Basara refers to the aesthetic of excess and breaking with tradition – the Japanese concept of avant-garde – that emerged from the Samurai culture in 14th Century Japan.
