Artists Jo Torr and Tarryn Motutere (Ngāpuhi) celebrate the work of weavers – known and unknown – in this beguiling exhibition of kete whakairo.
In 1984 teacher and curator Mick Pendergrast published Raranga Whakairo – a collection of 208 Māori weaving patterns collected over the previous 20 years.
In Remembering, Torr and Motutere present a series of kete whakairo based on those patterns, in honour of the weavers who’ve gone before them and in celebration of a shared narrative of Māori and Pākehā worlds coming together.
